The type of projects helped by Monmouthshire RCA

Penterry Church and Field Restoration Committee

Penterry Church and Field Restoration photographRCA has worked with the group for some time on various projects, the latest being the Penterry History project. The group were successful with their bid to the RCA Project Support and Development Fund, which enabled them to secure a start up grant of £750. With the money the group has done some extensive research work on the history of the church and the old village of Penterry and they are now on the point of trying to decide in what format to publish the information. They did decide to do a display at the recent flower festival that took place in the church at which interest was extremely high for the published book! The group are also investigating the possibility of becoming part of adventa's Living History Project.

Llanover W.I.

Photo of Llanover WILlanover Women's Institute have been running workshops in patchwork and needlecraft for members interested in rural crafts. Members have already produced some lovely work under the guidance of a tutor. However, all 8 were reliant on a single sewing machine brought each time by the tutor.

They approached Rural Community Action who awarded them a grant to purchase two machines. W.I. Treasurer, Judith Jones said "the group is progressing well with their chosen projects and learning new skills, and work continues on larger projects e.g. quilts and wall hangings. The sewing machines are a great asset".

The Bryn Trading Post

The village Post Office and Shop at The Bryn, near Abergavenny, closed in October 2004. Community Councillors approached RCA/adventa to ask if the former village school canteen could be rented and adapted for use as a post office/shop, and for the support of the local RCA officer. This was agreed, a village survey carried out to ascertain demand and an informal steering group formed. Planning permission for change of use has been obtained as well as grants from the Welsh Assembly Government and the Post Office to refurbish, make secure the building, and create disabled access.

Local fundraising secured £2,385 in loans and £280 from a  Silent Auction and coffee morning at Penpergwm House. The conversion work has been completed, and the "Bryn Trading Post" opened for business in September 2006.

The Birbeck Park Regeneration Group, was created because children in the area had nowhere to play, and were causing problems in the community. Some of the residents felt that developing a play area from a small patch of grassland would help.

RCA helped the residents to work together and to find funding and the play area is now moving towards completion.

Raglan Music Festival

In April 2005 a few people decided to put on a Music Festival in Raglan, and within 8 weeks, 16 different types of musical groups were booked to perform in various venues within the village. The RCA Development Worker worked with the committee and gave a grant to help with staging the event. It was a complete sell out, including music workshops for the children of the village. The 2006 Festival was even bigger and more sucessful. Plans are now well underway for the 2007 Festival from June 8th - 10th

Chepstow Country Market

Photo of Chepstow Country Market When Chepstow Country Market moved, volunteers needed to make people aware of the new location. They also wanted to present a new image which would be more in keeping with today’s modern market. RCA identified a source of funding for banners, leaflets and signs, and advised on marketing and PR, resulting in an increase in people attending the market.
